A new study has revealed that Talk to Me is the most searched horror movie in America over the past year.

Online Casinos comparison service Casino Alpha analyzed the average monthly search volume from September 2023 to August 2024 for the 250 most reviewed horror movies on IMDb. These figures were then ranked from highest to lowest to determine which horror movies Americans were most interested in searching for last year.

Talk to Me ranked as the most searched horror movie over the past year with 1,154,779 average monthly searches. It has around 162,000 ratings on IMDb, resulting in an average score of 7.1 out of 10. Released in 2022, this Australian supernatural horror movie stars Sophie Wilde and follows a group of teenagers who discover they can contact deceased spirits.

Gremlins came second with 509,001 average monthly searches. It has a score of 7.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 252,000 ratings. Released in 1984, this American comedy horror movie sees a town being overrun at Christmas by mischievous gremlins after one is received as a pet.

American Psycho ranked third with 455,196 average monthly searches. It has around 739,000 ratings on IMDb, resulting in an average score of 7.6 out of 10. Released in 2000, this satirical horror movie stars Christian Bale as an investment banker who seems to lead a double life as a serial killer.

Halloween came fourth with 444,272 average monthly searches. It has a score of 7.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 312,000 ratings. Released in 1978, this American slasher indie film follows an escaped mental patient who stalks teenage victims on Halloween. It also stars Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut.

What We Do in the Shadows ranked fifth with 404,504 average monthly searches. It has around 203,000 ratings on IMDb, resulting in an average score of 7.6 out of 10. Released in 2014, this New Zealand mockumentary horror comedy was directed by and stars Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, following a group of vampires who live together in a flat in Wellington.

Other horror movies in the top ten include Jeepers Creepers, Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, X, 28 Days Later, and Saw.

A spokesperson from Casino Alpha commented on the findings:

“As Halloween approaches, this study shows that Americans are just as interested in discovering or rewatching older horror movies as they are in watching newer horror. This is likely because these results come from online search volumes, where audiences can watch movies on demand cheaper than catching new releases in the cinema.

“Many of the films in the top ten are also notably the beginning of a successful franchise, either followed by multiple sequels or receiving a television spin-off. It could be suggested that this kept them relevant and memorable in pop culture, with the option to rewatch the original movies for nostalgia or perhaps preferring them above sequels.”
