A new study has revealed America’s favorite Christmas movies, with ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ taking the top spot.

Online casino website Nieuwe Casinos examined the number of monthly Google searches for more than 180 Christmas movies. Various search terms were used to calculate the most searched for festive movies, including ‘movie watch online’, ‘movie stream’ and ‘watch movie.’

A monthly average was then calculated to find America’s five most searched-for Christmas films nationally and in each state.

  1. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) – 221,819 monthly searches 

America’s favorite Christmas film is ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, with an average of 221,819 monthly searches.

Despite being released more than 75 years ago, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ remains a family favorite and achieves an impressive 8.6 out 10 on IMDb. The film centers around businessman George Bailey, played by James Stewart, who, after contemplating suicide, is visited by an angel who shows him what life would look like is he has never existed.

    2. The Holiday (2006) – 156,645 monthly searches.

America’s second favorite Christmas film is ‘The Holiday,’ with an average of 156,645 monthly searches.

Starring Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Jude Law, and Cameron Diaz, this romantic comedy centres around two women who agree to swap their homes for the holidays, in order to escape their relationship problems.

   3. Elf (2003) – 118,774 monthly searches

‘Elf’ is America’s third favorite Christmas film, with an average of 118,774 monthly searches.

A favorite among both children and adults, Will Ferrell stars as Buddy the Elf, who after being raised by elves in the North Pole, sets off on an adventure to New York to find his father.

   4. Bad Santa (2003) – 112,517 monthly searches

America’s fourth most popular Christmas film is ‘Bad Santa’, with an average of 112,517 monthly searches.

Starring Billy Bob Thorton as a fraudster who, along with his sidekick, set out to rob a department stall, dressed as Santa and an elf. Their plans get turned upside down when they befriend an eight-year-old boy who brings out their kinder side.

   5. Little Women (2019) – 100,899 monthly searches

‘Little Women’ is America’s fifth most popular Christmas film, with an average of 100,899 monthly searches.

This 2019 film is the most recent adaptation of Louise May Alcott’s 1868 novel of the same name. Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan and Eliza Scanlen, the movie follows the March sisters, as they navigate the ups and downs of young adulthood whilst their father is fighting in the American Civil War.
